DESCRIPTION

The Streetlight School playground is situated in the Bjala Square courtyard. The design team used low-cost and up-cycled materials as part of an innovative material pallet. Pallet planters were designed to act as seating elements along the courtyard edge and to introduce fragrance and colour as contrasting elements to the hard surroundings. These planters are also used for the growing of vegetables, which becomes an educational component of the school's curriculum.

This project had little to no material wastage as a result of innovative design and the use of standard material sizes. All planting used in the design are indigenous and have low water requirements, while the play towers and surface treatment comply with playground safety regulations. The school provides new and exciting educational opportunities to children in the area and is transforming Jeppe in a positive way.
