DESCRIPTION
Fieldworks Design Group was employed to design a school in the heart of the rural area in Tanzania. Due to the site’s separation from any services the school had to be self-sufficient, producing its own power and water to use within the school. Furthermore, the rural situation made it difficult to transport any construction material to the site. Containers were used so that the school could be manufactured off-site, and erected on-site within a couple of weeks. Multi-use spaces were of utmost importance for use during school hours, as well as after hours for the live-in students and teachers. The strong west-east axis of buildings formed a security barrier for the school, as well as an open-air courtyard for breaktimes and school assemblies. The water towers form a focal point at the termination of this axis to pay homage to the sustainability of the school. Finally, the live-in units create passive surveillance looking out at the entrance of the school.
