DESCRIPTION

Streetlight School is located at BJala Square. The school formally opened in January 2016 and provides education to many of the areas youths. Streetlight School received a four-star Green-star rating - a first for South African schools in an urban environment.

Born from necessity, the initial streetlight schools design methodology was one of creative reuse combined with novel construction methods in the attempt to create a feasible learning space within an existing industrial building. Constructing a learning space without any budget for material or labor necessitated using mostly found materials (Pallets, standard hollow core doors, timber purlins).

Spatially we worked with the physical constraints of the existing building as our guide and attempted to accommodate for multiple activities within the limited intervention.
